Description:
|
This map shows Renfrewshire, bounded by the River Clyde and the White Cart River in the east, and by the watershed boundary with Cunningham to the south. The map is remarkable for its very high rural settlement density and for the elaborate engraved devices to some locate places prominently, places such as Paisley and its Abbey adjacent. The map was engraved in Amsterdam from a manuscript draft prepared by Robert Gordon of Straloch, whose source was a late sixteenth century manuscript map by Timothy Pont which is now in the National Library of Scotland. The engraving was first published in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, in 1654. A blank cartouche and shield were prepared in anticipation of a dedication.
