Description:
The map shows that part of Knapdale between Tarbet and Loch Crinan, as well as the west shores of Loch Fyne as far north as Inverary, and part of the west coast of Jura. Depiction of settlement is largely confined to the coasts, with only the Castle of Tarbet much emphasised. Ptolemy is quoted as an authority in Loch Fyne. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654.
