Description:
The map covers the north of Ayrshire, bounded by the River Irvine in the south, and in the north by the watershed which is the boundary with Renfrewshire. The map shows that this part of Ayrshire was very densely settled, something confirmed in a separate topographic description of Cunningham also compiled by Pont and which survives in transcript. The map was compiled from observation on the ground by Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century. It was engraved in Amsterdam, for publication in Blaeu's Atlas Novus, first published in 1654.
