Description:
An unfinished map of upper Deeside from its headwaters in the Cairngorms, through Inverey, Braemar (Castelton), Monaltrie and Aboyne to Kincardine O'Neil, with small parts of adjacent catchments. Upper Strath Don and the Deveron are also shown. Named settlements are most numerous along the Tarland Burn. South is at the top of the map. The smaller map continues the Dee catchment as far east as Drum, with most settlement detail on the north bank. Both maps were compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at an unknown date after 1633. The main source is likely to be the observations of Timothy Pont, in the last two decades of the sixteenth century, with the possibility of original additions by Gordon.
