Description:
This map entitled The Shires of Caithness and Sutherland was published in 1725 as part of the Atlas of Scotland by Herman Moll (1654?-1732). It shows roads, topographical features and settlements. At Brora a note refers to 'excellent coal mines and salt pans'. The open cast coal mines which began at Brora in 1529 dug coal from rich exposed surface seams. Later shafts were dug and mining continued until 1974. Salt pans were often situated near coastal coal mines, thus coal could be used as fuel to boil salt water to extract the salt. The Brora salt pans were started in 1598. Salt, essential for food preservation, would have been traded widely along the coast.
