Description:
This map entitled 'The Shires of Ross, and Cromartie' was made in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. The scale shows 'Miles of Great Britain', a reminder of the 1707 Act of Union. The difficulties of communication around the indented coast of the Highlands are emphasized by the fact that Moll often marked and commented on ferries. Ferries are shown on either side of the Black Isle and between Tain and Durnoch. The military roads are shown from Berera barracks beside Glen Loyn. The northern road ran to Dingwall through the Beaback Pass. The southern road lay through the Glenshells Pass (Glenshiel) to Fort Augustus (Kilwhuimon).
