Description:
This map entitled The West Part of Inverness shire was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. It shows the west end of the Great Glen from Fort Augustus to Fort William. General Wade, who improved and built a network of forts and roads for the English army after the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1719, made his headquarters at Fort Augustus (Kilwhuimon). The road linking Fort Augustus and Ruthven to the south followed a drove road through the very difficult mountain pass of Corrieyairack. It was built by regular soldiers in a single season between April and October.
