Description:
A map entitled The Shires of Murray (Moray) and Nairn which was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. It shows roads, topographical features and settlements. Loch Spynie, north of Elgin is shown accurately for the time as a large loch. It is now much reduced in size after it was drained by the building of the Caledonian canal by Thomas Telford in 1808. In the medieval period the loch, shown here as landlocked, was open to the sea. It provided a safe harbour and was a major reason for locating the bishop's palace and its dependant settlement at Spynie.
