Description:
This map entitled 'The Shires of Bamf (Banff) and Aberdeen' was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. It shows roads, topographical features and settlements. The settlements marked are variable. Burghs, marked with a tower, include medieval burghs such as Banff, as well as 16th century establishments such as Fraserburgh. Dots are used both to indicate castles such as Kelly and for tiny settlements such as nearby Methlick. The Cistercian Abbey of Deer, founded in 1219, is named on the map although in the 18th century it would have been in ruins after the Reformation of the 16th century. Substantial ruins survived until they were robbed in 1854.
