Description:
This map entitled, The Shire of Kincairden (Kincardine) or Mears (Mearns) with the South Part of Aberdeenshire was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654? - 1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. It shows roads, topographical features and settlements. No roads are marked, reflecting that, even in the later 18th century, commentators were complaining of the difficulties of travel in Aberdeenshire. This also had a detrimental effect on agricultural improvements due to the difficulty of carting fertilisers inland. There were established drove routes at this time but they are not marked. For example, there is no indication of the Cairn o Mount route through the mountains between Aberdeenshire and the Mearns which ran south from Banchorie (Banchory) along the Dyr (Dye) valley.
