Description:
|
This map of 'The Shires of Fife and Kinros' was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of his Atlas of Scotland. It shows roads, topographical features and settlements. Several navigation notes are marked on the coast. The lighthouse marked on the Isle of May was built in 1636 and is the earliest surviving lighthouse in Scotland. It was a tower with a beacon fire of coal on top. There were a few other early lighthouses on islands but those in the sea date from after 1756. Opposite the Tay the Scape rocks ( Inchcape or Bell Rock) are described as extremely dangerous. The ferry crossing over the Firth of Forth between Burntisland and Leith is marked with a note that a boat travels the route every day.
