Description:
This map entitled 'The Shires of Stirling and Clackmannan etc', was engraved and published in 1725 by Herman Moll (1654?-1732) as part of the Atlas of Scotland. It shows roads, topographical features, settlements and major estates. Silver mines are marked to the south of Linlithgow. There may be some silver in the lead deposits in this area. Silver mines said to have been in use during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots (1542- 1587) are recorded in the Pentland Hills. The Antonine wall is marked as Graham's Dike. It is a turf rampart and ditch stretching between the River Clyde and the Firth of Forth which was built by the Romans in the 2nd century AD as a defensive frontier barrier.
