Description:
|
The Shire of Lenox or Dunbarton', a map from Herman Moll's 1725 atlas. This map includes comments as well, particularly concerning Loch Lomond's 'Floting Island' and weather. Other notable features include: the scale which adds '60 to a D.'; the area north of the loch, cited as 'Rob Roy's Country', which also reveals a barracks; the line along Loch Lomond's western shore, running through Dunbarton and on to Glasgow; and the double line from Kilpatrick, part of which is referred to as 'Graham's Dike' and is most likely the Antonine Wall. After his first solo work in 1695, Moll produced maps which frequently included substantial text, until the 1709 'Atlas Manuale' which included little.
