Description:
|
A map from Herman Moll's 1725 atlas, 'The Shire of Bute, contains Bute and Arran, with Cantire which is part of Argyle Shire'. The island of Gigha is also included. Both Arran and Kintyre are shown in great detail though the relative locations of settlements and features should be noted, such as Lochranza and Brodick on Arran. On the same island, Goatfell is referred to as 'Keadefeldt Hill'. Curiously, little information is provided for the island of Bute while the south of Arran is quite narrow. In Kintyre, the east-west orientation of West Loch Tarbert is notable. Campbeltown probably had fewer than 500 inhabitants at this time and had only recently been made a Royal burgh in 1700.
