Description:
|
The South Part of the Shire of Air; Containing Kyle and Carrick', a map in Herman Moll's 1725 atlas of Scotland. This map of southern Ayrshire, from Irvine to Glen App on the west coast, includes many details about villages and burghs, as well as natural features, including Ailsa Craig ('Ailza I[sland]'). Interesting features include the villages in the south between, and inland from, Glen App and 'Ard Stinsiar Castle'. Unusually, Moll also includes some rectangular symbols (probably signifying enclosures) near some settlements (such as Ardmillen); this is in contrast to his usual circular symbols. A road, mostly following the path of the present-day A77, is found along the coast, changing from dotted to solid lines near Girvan.
