Description:
A map of 'The Shire of Clydsdale or Lanerk' by Herman Moll from his 1725 atlas of Scottish counties. The River Clyde dominates the map and is supplied by the Avon, Calder, Nethan and Douglas rivers. Lanarkshire was surrounded by eight other counties. The county town of Lanarkshire was Hamilton but Glasgow is symbolised as the most important here. The map provides an interesting glimpse at the pre-industrial landscape: note the absence of Coatbridge and Airdrie. Other interesting features include the spelling of Rutherglen ('Ruglan', a name still used), and the fewer number of enclosed areas than is found on other maps in the atlas.
