Description:
Tweddale, alias The Shire of Peebles', a map from Herman Moll's 1725 atlas of Scottish counties. Degrees and minutes of latitude and longitude are marked along the frame. Peebles had a population of just over 1,000 at this time. The map includes details not found on most of the other maps of the period, such as the extra drawings around Peebles. The hills have a coarser shading, and the placement of some settlements differs from maps today (e.g., note the relative positions of Stobo, Peebles, Traquair and Posso). In 1695 Moll published his first solo work, the 'Thesaurus Geographicus'.
