Description:
A map of 'Dumfries or Nithisdale' from Herman Moll's 1725 atlas of Scottish shires. This is the western part of Dumfriesshire centred on the River Nith which flows into the Solway Firth; curiously, the border with Kirkcudbrightshire peters out. The area includes several religious centres (e.g., the medieval Lincluden College) and a large number of small settlements. Rivers are a major focus of the map and tend to run east-west here. Dumfries probably had a population of c.3,000 at this time. Moll also made charts for John Adair, the Scottish geographer who in 1686 produced his own map of the shires in the west and south-west of Scotland.
