Description:
|
A map of 'The West Part of Galloway', or Wigtonshire, in Herman Moll's 1725 atlas at a scale of c.5 miles to the inch. Settlements are given scaled symbols (including stars for larger sites); Wigtown probably had a population below 1,000 while Stranraer's was below 500. Some place names have disappeared while others have been renamed or are now spelled differently (e.g., 'Stranraver' for Stranraer). Moll probably left the north of Germany in the 1670s during the Scanian Wars. Possibly going through Holland, he had arrived in London by 1678-79, a popular city for German émigrés.
