Description:
A French map of Scotland by Alain Manesson Mallet, entitled 'Royaume d'Ecosse'. It concerns mainland Scotland and is partially coloured. The border delineates lines of longitude and latitude. The map appeared in 'Description de l'Univers', published in Paris in 1683, and is now part of the Marischal Collection. The map bears little resemblance to Robert Gordon's 1654 map and is apparently based more on Mercator's of 1595 but without its level of detail. The coastline is strikingly drawn, but is very inaccurate; the interior is labelled primarily with regions though some of the main burghs are included. Mallet (1630?-1706?) was a French geographer and engineer who first served in the Portuguese army and then worked for Louis XIV.
