Description:
This map of the Orkney Islands was engraved in 1599 by Pieter van den Keere (1571-c.1646), a Flemish engraver who worked in London at the end of the 16th century. His sister married the Amsterdam map maker Jodocus Hondius. It was published by George Humble in 1627 in 'England Wales Scotland and Ireland described and abridged from a far larger volume done by John Speed'. In fact, this pocket atlas included maps such as this which were not in Speed's volume. Pocket atlases were a cheaper version of the large atlases produced in the 17th century. They demonstrate that the interest in scientific and geographical knowledge was not confined to the richest members of 17th century society.
