Description:
A map of the North and West of Scotland, referred to here as 'Stranauerne' (Strathnaver). Originally produced in 1599 by Pieter van den Keere, it was re-issued in Speed's atlas of 1627 with an English title. Placed with west at the top, prominent areas include Lochaber ('Loquabria'), Breadalbane, Sutherland, Ross, Assynt, and the large province of Strathnaver. Notable features include: the relative locations of Cape Wrath and Durness; the presence of Petty but not Inverness; the small size of Rhum; and the positioning of Glenelg, a ferry port for the Isle of Skye. Keere was based in Amsterdam but lived in England (1584-93) to escape religious persecution. He produced numerous maps, including one of the world in 1608.
