Description:
A map of the eastern part of Scotland by Pieter van den Keere in 1599 and re-issued in Speed's 1627 atlas. Like the six other Scottish maps from this atlas, it comes from the Marischal collection held by the National Library of Scotland. Ranging from Angus to Caithness, the map highlights the burghs and rivers of the Northeast. The rivers are particularly accentuated, giving the coast a jagged appearance. (Note also the use of the Latin term 'flu.', i.e., 'fluvius', for river.) John Speed (1552?-1629), the historian and cartographer, began publishing the 'County maps of England and Wales' in 1603. From 1611 these were published, along with one map of Scotland, as 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain'.
