Description:
A map primarily of the west of Scotland, though titled the 'southerne parte of Scotland'; it was made by Pieter van den Keere in 1599 and re-issued in Speed's 1627 atlas. The map's area extends from the Solway Firth to Mull; west is placed at the top. Scaled symbols differentiate castles, burghs and large burghs. Particularly interesting are the locations of several islands (e.g., Iona and Islay), the shapes of others, especially Arran, and the absence of Ayr. The coastline from the Firth of Clyde to Galloway is more irregular than Mercator's 1595 map. Additionally, the Mull of Galloway and Loch Lomond are more akin to Ortelius's 1573 map.
