Description:
|
This map of the south part of Scotland appeared in Speed's 1627 atlas but was originally produced by Pieter van den Keere in 1599. Like his other maps in this atlas, it was produced from a plate bought by George Humble; the Dutch titles were later replaced with English ones. The map is situated with west at the top and covers an area from the Solway Firth to Angus. There are scaled symbols for towns (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and St Andrews receive an extra circle), and numerous burghs are included along the Forth coast and in Clydesdale. Notable are the interesting spellings of some burghs, such as Culross ('Curloys'). Humble (d. 1640) was a publisher, and book and print seller.
