Description:
A map of Scotland attributed to Pieter van den Keere (1571-1646), a cartographer and bookseller in Amsterdam. It originally appeared in John Speed's 1627 atlas 'England Wales Scotland and Ireland described' which ran to several editions until 1676. This map is probably based on Speed's 1610 map of Scotland rather than on Keere's work. It differs in several ways from others attributed to him (e.g., spellings, landmarks, draughtsmanship) suggesting that a different cartographer produced it. The map includes the main lochs in shapes similar to Mercator's 1595 map but makes the North-West coast smooth; curiously Glasgow is omitted.
