Description:
A large map, oriented with south at the top, bounded in the north by the Moray Firth from Inverness to Cullen, and including the catchments of the Nairn, Findhorn and Spey. The map extends in a southwesterly direction as far as Loch Arkaig, Ben Nevis and Loch Eil, bordering on Ardgour. Where original work has faded in the Spey Valley, the map has been partly redrawn. The map is an uncompleted draft compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at a date between 1633 and ca. 1645. The east part of the map covers country close to Gordon's home. Whilst most of Gordon's compilations are derivatory, notably from the maps of Timothy Pont, originality is most likely in the lower Spey valley.
