Description:
|
A small scale map of the north of Scotland with appropriate detail north of the Great Glen (apart from Tarbert Ness) and on the Moray Firth coastlands. Elsewhere, little more than the main drainage lines are shown. The coastline of Sutherland and the Moray Firth conforms to the revised orientations which emerged from the late sixteenth century observations of Timothy Pont and from the later compilations of Robert Gordon. The map is an uncompleted draft compiled by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661), at an unknown date after 1633. Whilst it has many similarities with his Extima Scotiae, published by Blaeu in 1654, the depiction of Knoydart, Moydart and Morven differs, which may explain why it was set aside.
