Description:
This image is of the book plates attached to the Glasgow University Library copy of John Adair's sea atlas, 'The Description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703). The upper label belongs to Victor Villiers, Earl of Jersey and shows the volume was once part of Osterley Park library. It is possible that the 4th Earl, a Lord of the Admiralty and member of the Society of Antiquaries, acquired the two Adair manuscript maps bound at the back of the volume after their being displayed in London in 1724. The lower plate is that of David Murray (1842-1928), a leading Glasgow lawyer and bibliographer closely connected with the University who donated his collection to its library in 1927.
