Description:
|
This map of the coast of Scotland from John Adair's 'The description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703) was copied from a map by the Frenchman Nicolas de Nicolay, which had been published in 1583. Nicolay, Sieur d'Arfeville, (or 'Nicholas the Painter' as he was sometimes known), published the map in his French version of the pioneering Rutter (or pilot-book) of the Scottish pilot Alexander Lindesay. This Rutter and Chart celebrated the circumnavigation of Scotland by King James V in 1540, in which Lindesay had taken part. Adair (1660-1718), a Leith born map-maker renowned for his coastal charts, used this map in his book because, as he said, his own map of Scotland was still incomplete. This map of Scotland is from John Adair's 'The Description of the Sea-Coast and Islands of Scotland' (1703). It is a direct copy of a map by the Frenchman Nicolas de Nicolay published in 1583. It provided a much better outline of Scotland than any previous map and was more accurate than any of the maps of the following century. The chart accompanied Nicolay's French version of the rutter (or sailing directions) of the Scots pilot, Alexander Lyndsay produced for King James V's circumnavigation of Scotland in 1540. Its inclusion in the atlas is rather a mystery for the outline of the Hebrides is unchanged from Mercator's depiction of 1564, despite Adair's own surveying expedition to these islands in 1698.
